Pregnancy is a physiological process accompanied by significant hormonal changes. During this period, some non-permanent changes such as change of the diopter values, accommodation problems and reduced tear production may be observed. The retinal break may develop during this period particularly in the patients with high myopia due to reasons like the nausea, the vomiting and the strength exertion during delivery. Hypertension developing during the pregnancy may cause retinal hemorrhage and edema. The progression rate of the disease increases in the post-pregnancy period in the patients with retinitis pigmentosa. The diabetes occurring during pregnancy does not pose a risk for the retina, but the existing diabetic retinopathy may progress.
The opinion of your physician should be asked about the eye drops used during the pregnancy.
